GLYCINE - FINE SWISS WATCHES
Think of Switzerland and you immediately think of fine chocolate, secret bank accounts and cuckoo clocks! But the Swiss are also famous for the quality of their watch making and the Glycine Company is one Switzerland's premier watch makers. Founded in 1914, the company soon became known for its small movements for ladies watches and up-market diamond studded cases in gold and platinum. After World War II they became known for their range of automatic (self-winding) watches and, later, their Vacuum Chronometers which were highly resistant to both shocks and water.
One of their best know lines - the Airman - was introduced to world in 1953 and was eagerly bought by the growing 'jet-set' who were able to see both local and world time at a glance. The Airman line spearheads the Glycine product range to this day.
Glycine, like much of the Swiss watch industry, suffered in the 1970s when quartz watches from Japan and later LED watches from America undercut the market for mechanical watches to the point where they could no longer compete. In 1984 the company was sold and has since re-emerged by concentrating on making new lines of mechanical watches. Glycine soon became known as a specialist in the area of large sized lines.
